My name is Branislav Prelevic, but everyone calls me “Bane”. I started playing basketball in the open courts of Belgrade. I always liked to shoot, and that’s what I learned to do well – I learned to do other things well, but people remember me for the big shots I took. Some I made, some I missed. That’s the life of an athlete: you get praised for the good ones, but you learn from the bad ones.
I played for various teams, but I spent my whole life at PAOK. I grew up there, I experienced moments of triumph and bitterness there, I loved and was loved there. And if I was criticized a little bit at some point, in the end there is only love left.
I feel grateful for everything I have won in my career – races, titles, money, unforgettable moments, friends… But most of it was gained by losing.
It may come as a surprise that I chose the title of my book, The Power of Defeat. I deeply believe that our defeats, whether on the field or anywhere else, define us. They give us the opportunity to look inside ourselves again, to observe our whole life from the beginning. They change us, they mature us, they transform us. Defeat is the most useful ally in our quest to become what we dream…
This book is not the story of my life. It is mostly what I learned about life through the moments that made me the Bane I am today.
